This year at Springboards:
May 12 - Too Late To Stop Now by Collin Doyle
A rye take on coming to terms as a recovering alcoholic awaiting the resurrection of his dearly departed dog considers a departed wife, a wayward son, and more than 50 deceased goldfish. A new play the creator of The Mighty Carlins (2008 Sterling Award winner for Best New Play).
May 13 - Cuba Libre by Connie Massing
A romance that chronicles an elderly woman’s relationship with a man whom she dated 60 years previously, from the perspective of a daughter who has given up on love.
May 14 - A night of excerpts featuring readings from Cyrano, a Puppet Show and Beowulf
May 19 - Inventing Rasputin by Darrin Hagen
Inventing Rasputin tells the true and untold story of the most infamous unsolved murder mystery in the world. As we approach the 100th anniversary of the legendary death of the Mad Monk, we are still far from knowing the real details of the murder of Rasputin. Inventing Rasputin explores the fascinating story behind the murder - and the man who created the fantastic tale through decades of mythologizing, and turned an incompetent, sloppy murder into one of the greatest stories ever told.
May 20 - Double Double by Kenneth Brown
A new play about a couple who spend way too much of their relationship time in Tim Horton's. Ken Brown's romantic comedy is about hope and hopelessness, about love and loneliness, about our need for connection. Its comfort food for thought.
May 21 - The Conversion of Axiom Broddard by Geoffrey Brumlik
The Conversion of Axiom Broddard enters the world of a man on the precipice of a life changing decision. Haunted by a single incident twenty years earlier he tries to make sense of how it has transformed his life. Based on actual events that took place on a beach in Mexico in 1955, the play is a unique, evocative exploration of the nature of our own perceptions and the unexpected mysteries they can create.
Developed partially as a multimedia piece drawing together elements of visual art, sound design and theatre, this reading is an exploration of the story at the heart of the work as the project develops toward production.
Workshop West is Edmonton’s new play theatre.
Gerry Potter's vision for Workshop West n 1978 and his intention in starting the Springboards New Play Festival in 1995 was to celebrate Canadian playwrights and their plays.
He also thought it important to invite audiences to participate in the process of play development. His idea seems to have been a good one. The 11 plays presented in the last Springboards New Play Festival have since received 23 productions (no kidding) in Edmonton and across Canada and internationally. That number will climb this season.
Springboards 2011 offers you a tantalizing glimpse into the future of Canadian theatre that will continue building Springboard’s legacy. You willl hear early drafts, mid-process work and plays destined for premieres next season - in Edmonton and across Canada. Meet the playwrights. Talk with them about their work. Contribute to the development of new plays!
