Fugitive, Martyr, Legend, Legendary Play
Presented by
in association with Workshop West.
In 1885, a young native man, arrested for killing his cow without a license, escapes after he’s taunted that his is a hanging crime. The ensuing manhunt leaves 4 dead. Almighty Voice becomes a martyr, a legend and an icon.
In 1991, playwright Daniel David Moses pens a play with two acts in radically different styles. Its dead hero returns in white face for Act 2 so his story can unfold in an other-worldly realm. Almighty Voice and His Wife is acclaimed seminal work of Canadian Aboriginal literature and one the great plays of Canadian theatre. Few have actually had the chance to see it.
In 2009, Native Earth Performing Arts produces the first major revival of Moses’ play in 18 years. Almighty Voice and His Wife wins rave reviews in Toronto and is invited to tour to London, UK. Now its touring Canada.
Native Earth's acclaimed production is presented in Edmonton by Alberta Aboriginal Arts, Edmonton’s new First Nations theatre company in association with Workshop West Theatre.
" Moses's play looks good on its feet. His poetry goes to the gut, his wordplay is clever, and there are real emotional arcs under the second act’s Brechtian trappings." – Kelly Nestruck, Globe and Mail
"a powerful piece, powerfully staged" – John Coulbourn, Toronto Sun
"The story ... is moving, disturbing, funny, confounding and beautiful." - Kate Watson, The Coast, Halifax
