“No. 2 is a subtle, humanistic and engaging piece of new theatre. Sami takes our breath away with the sheer cleverness and athleticism of her performance.” – Scotland on Sunday
At four in the morning, cantankerous Fijian matriarch Nanna Maria decides that her time is up. In true Fijian fashion, she orders her grandson to organize a feast so she can name her successor—her No. 2. She wants all of her grandkids there, but none of her children; "they’re all bloody useless." She wants a feast complete with a pig on a spit, red wine in bottles (not cartons) and a priest – the only “outsider”. And there is to be one more unexpected guest...
Fast-moving and touching, No. 2 features Madeleine Sami portraying all nine characters in a virtuosic solo performance which earned her the Chapman Tripp New Zealand Theatre Award for Outstanding Performance.
Toa Fraser’s play No. 2 premiered in 1999 to critical and audience acclaim. Honored with the Fringe First Award at the 2000 Edinburgh Fringe, the show went on to a nationwide New Zealand tour and runs in Holland, Jamaica, Mexico, London and New York.
