Edmonton’s contemporary aerial arts company, soars with a crazy, true tale –M &K.
Eva Peron, wife of Argentine President Juan Peron, was born in poverty but she rose to spectacular heights. Deeply adored by Argentina’s working class, she was praised as a feminist and champion of the poor and officially named Argentina’s "Spiritual Leader" by its congress. She was decried her as a corrupt fascist with Nazi sympathies and deeply hated by the wealthy upper class. History has praised her as a feminist and a champion of the poor. After Eva’s death from cancer at age of 33, Juan had her body embalmed to the point of immortalization, had several duplicates made and planned a massive monument with a glass coffin at its base, but a military coup overthrew him in 1955. In the ensuing political turmoil Eva’s corpse and its copies disappeared, going on a 16-year odyssey as captivating as any story of Eva Peron alive.
Using a fusion of narrative, aerial arts, multimedia and tango, Operation EVAsion examines the oppositional viewpoints surrounding the mythology of Evita and how cultural needs and wants shape our perspective.
