A Statement from Our Artistic Producer About Anti-Racism

Workshop West stands in solidarity and gratitude for the labour and lessons of the activists and artists who have put themselves on-the-line to challenge racism in our our communities.

Racism is complicated and pervasive. The visible and invisible systems that create and prop-up its inequities are invisible and deep. They are at the root of the unconscious ways we go about doing the simplest tasks in our daily lives.

Workshop West is committed to anti-racism and continuing to examine what must be done to create equity.

Throughout my career, I've attempted to use the platforms I have been afforded in order to shine a light on the injustices in our culture and society. I continue this work at Workshop West, with a growing awareness of the need for persistent examination of theatrical process in order to create equitable, safe, and inclusive workspaces.

I am committed to thoughtfully moving forward in consultation, conversation, and community with Black, Indigenous, and Peoples of all Colour and Cultures to build a theatre that is safe, joyful, and inclusive.

There is much more for me to learn and do on this journey.

At WWPT we ASPIRE TO LISTEN FULLY, TO LEARN HUNGRILY, AND TO USE THE PLATFORM WE HAVE BEEN ENTRUSTED WITH TO UP-LIFT THE FULL DIVERSITY OF THE ARTISTS AND CREATORS WHO LIVE, WORK AND PLAY WITH US IN OUR COMMUNITY.

Our doors and minds are open. We invite you to contact us directly with your questions, concerns, and ideas about how we can build the world which we all long for.
