Spring Awakening

Adapted from Frank Wedenkind’s seminal 1891 play of the same name, Spring Awakening is a pop-rock musical which explores the awakening of adolescent sexuality living in the repressive social culture of late 19th century Germany. Wedenkind’s original play preceded both G. Stanley Hall’s Adolescence and Freud’s Three Essays on the Theory of Sexuality by 14 years, articulating the realities of pubescence before it entered the scientific canon.

The music for the production is written by Duncan Sheik with both the book and lyrics being written by Steven Sater. Taking the pop-rock genre to a story which is over 100 years old, Sheik and Sater showcase the timeless nature of the coming of age genre.

Produced by Brave Spaces Theatre, this production of Spring Awakening is a concert style performance which brings young, emerging artists from across the city together to work and celebrate one another through the text and music of Spring Awakening in a low-stakes environment.
