For nearly 50 years, Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre has played a unique and vital role in the ecology of our province: shining a light on Alberta writers and developing many of Canada’s most senior playwrights. WWPT was the first theatre company in Alberta to dedicate itself solely to new Canadian plays. We remain one of the few Canadian companies to develop and produce Canadian work as our singular focus!

2025/2026 FUNDRAISER UPDATES…
This past year has been a remarkable one for Workshop West, and it wouldn’t have been possible without the generosity of supporters like yourselves. While the season started out with a bit of a hiccup, we truly felt the kindness of the community. Our team, artists, and audiences rallied with incredible resilience, making sure Nicole Moeller’s WILDCAT was a success - it was inspiring to see the play’s theme take place in real life! In 2024 we launched our Pay What You Will initiative, seeing an increase in audience attendance by 74%, and we were on par with that again this season. Our first holiday event, Bright Lights: A Holiday Cabaret was a night to remember, featuring festive songs from some of your favourite local artists, plus a reading of And I’m Home: A Holiday Radio Play from the minds behind Krampus: The Musical. Sass, class and fun were at the helm of the Guys in Disguise Classic year-end fundraiser and silent auction! Hosted by Darrin Hagen, guests were treated to some of the finest performances by Edmonton’s most renowned queens, while nearly 40 local companies donated items and experiences to the auction. Perhaps the most overwhelming gesture was the Presents for Playwrights campaign for Giving Tuesday - a heartwarming reminder of just how much supporting local theatre and playwrights means to the community. All of the funds raised went to help out the Springboards Annual New Play Festival, and we had record attendance with some of the city’s hottest new work!
NEW SUMMER/FALL CAMPAIGN…
BUCKS FOR THE BOOTH!
When Workshop West moved into The Gateway Theatre, part of our commitment to the community was to provide an accessible, affordable, and professional space for other theatre artists to rent.
In that spirit, we’re rejuvenating the tech booth this summer! It’s served The Gateway Theatre well for many years, but is in need of a makeover. We’ll be creating more space, a new staircase, and a more polished environment for the designers and technicians of Edmonton to work in. If you have a couple bucks to spare, we’d so appreciate it if you’d consider donating them to the booth in order to improve the quality of work, and the quality of experience for many beloved Edmonton artists!
SUCCESS STORIES!
$4230 donated for the Springboards New Play Festival that showcased the talents of over 70 artists this year, with 30 readings of new plays (snippets or full length) over the course of five days!
Between Pay What You Will tickets, and generously donated silent auction items, The Guys in Disguise Classic Fundraiser raised $4601 for future play development and production. Huge thanks to our sponsor, Fruit Loop!
Our very first holiday event was packed with musical theatre, and Christmas enthusiasts alike, raising $4105 for towards a new board for the theatre. It was a blast, and we can’t wait to host another one this coming season!
