Canadian Creativity: It Starts Here!
For nearly 50 years, Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre has played a unique and vital role in the ecology of our province: shining a light on Alberta writers and developing many of Canada’s most senior playwrights. WWPT was the first theatre company in Alberta to dedicate itself solely to new Canadian plays. We remain one of the few Canadian companies to develop and produce Canadian work as our singular focus!
By supporting Workshop West, you become part of the ongoing story, and Canadian theatre history! Your donation enables us to expand our reach, deepen our connections, and foster a cultural legacy for generations to come.
If you are able, please consider contributing.
We are in a committed relationship with Edmontonians who thrive on new ideas, great art, and our city’s famed start-up spirit!
This year, we're celebrating the people who shape the stories on our stage: playwrights.
Their imaginations build the world we step into - funny, fierce, moving, messy, and magical - and we want to give them the one thing every artist needs: support.
PRESENTS FOR PLAYWRIGHTS: A GIFT THAT KEEPS GIVING
Presents for Playwrights is a campaign to help fund the development of brand-new plays right here in Edmonton. Funds donated through Giving Tuesday will go towards Workshop West's annual Springboards New Play Festival, and we are hoping to raise $10,000. The Springboards New Play Festival is a small but mighty force in the cultural life of our city and our province. It is the perfect expression of Workshop West’s raison d’être, and is one of our key platforms to develop new plays towards production while implicating our audiences in the process.
When you donate, you're giving a playwright the tools they need to bring a new story to life:
-Time to write
-Workshops and readings
-Actor and dramaturgical support
-Development towards the next world premiere
The goal is to enhance WWPT's ability to serve more Edmonton writers by providing a larger number of local playwrights with opportunities to access creative teams for longer durations of time. Over a period of six days, our 2024/2025 Springboards Festival showcased new works from twenty playwrights, and over 70 artists lent their talents to bring these staged readings to life with sound, light, and enough staging to ignite the imagination.
WHAT A DONATION MIGHT LOOK LIKE…
$600 - Sponsor a full workshop with the playwright, actors, director, and dramaturg
$250 - Sponsor a director
$150 - Sponsor an actor
$100 - Sponsor a technician
$50 - Get everyone coffee to keep them going!
UPDATE! WE REACHED 40% OF OUR GOAL! HUGE THANKS TO EVERYONE FOR YOUR SUPPORT!
At Workshop West, we champion Canadian voices. Your gift fuels the next bold new play - one that could make you laugh, cry, gasp, or leap to your feet. This Giving Tuesday, help us keep new Canadian stories thriving.
