The Edmonton Playwrights’ Circle is a place for playwrights to gather, discuss, and focus on developing their craft.
Through group conversation, the sharing of work, and the occasional writing exercise, playwrights will be encouraged to take risks and continue their writing practice.
WE WILL BE ANNOUNCING OUR NEW
PLAYWRIGHT IN RESIDENCE IN THE FALL…
The sessions are free of charge and open to all playwrights at any level of experience. There is no expectation for playwrights to attend all of the sessions, the EPC is offered on a drop in basis.
Playwrights are invited to bring any writing they might like to hear read aloud by their peers in the group. The 2026/27 Edmonton Playwrights’ Circle will be co-presented by the University of Alberta Drama Department - STAY TUNED FOR YOUR NEXT FEARLESS LEADER!
We were absolutely thrilled to have Ron Jenkins, one of Canada’s leading playwrights and directors, hosting the Edmonton Playwrights’ Circle last season! His work with the EPC and the Springboards New Play Festival was a riot, featuring and evening of staged, site-specific readings from the group in all the hidden nooks and crannies of The Gateway Theatre.
The EPC has been very fortunate in having many brilliant minds over the years help to shape fascinating new theatre in our city. We can’t wait to see what comes next!
Thank you to Ron Jenkins!
STAY TUNED FOR THE 2026/2027 EPC DATES!
All EPC sessions take place at:
The Gateway Theatre
(8529 Gateway Blvd)

Don’t take our word for it… Here’s what people have to say!
“The Edmonton Playwrights’ Circle is such a special place to be! I love how people from different backgrounds and experience levels are truly welcome. A place for voices new and old, a place for learning and meeting in a setting focused on honing writing skills, having thoughtful and honest discussions about theatre, industry, and art, and absolutely having fun. So many playwrights come in on day one with nothing but a spark of an idea and by the end come out with pages proudly headed for the stage. Can’t wait to see what the next group will create. Bravo!”

“EPC is a very welcoming group. As someone joining with no previous playwriting experience, the group was a very supportive setting for having my work read out loud for the first time. I learnt a lot about the process of playwriting and especially enjoyed having the opportunity to write/preform the five minutes plays.”

“I love LOVE this program - I’ve participated for four years, and really appreciate the great work that began its journey here. This year was brilliant with the addition of the performance evening that Ron invented - it was absolutely top-flight in its value to writers, both old and new!!! It is invaluable (and not easy!) to hear your new work out loud by someone else who understands theatre. Participants really blossomed and loved writing as a result - many for the first time, and many seasoned to support the new ones. It is a magical experience to have and watch! Thank you!!!”
