ABOUT US

Workshop West Playwrights’ Theatre (WWPT) began its journey in 1978 and continues to be among the most prolific and influential theatre companies in Western Canada and part of the intrinsic fibre of Edmonton’s artistic and cultural life. WWPT is a professional, Edmonton-based theatre company dedicated to the development, production, promotion and presentation of new Canadian playwrights and their plays, and to the education of the public about writing and play creation. From its beginnings, WWPT has celebrated local stories, nurtured artists, and created space for cultural exchange, and has played a vital role in the ecology of our province, shining a light on Alberta writers and creators. Over the years, the company has had significant roles in developing many of Canada’s most senior playwrights.

Now in its 43rd season, WWPT is unique in Edmonton and in Alberta. We are the only arts organization specifically committed and dedicated to supporting and developing the work of Canadian playwrights from the inception of their first ideas through to the full professional production of their work on Edmonton stages. We offer an array of programming which seeks out, supports, hones, and ultimately breathes life into new Canadian writing. Serving Edmonton writers as a priority, WWPT empowers Canadian artists and the Canadian voice. WWPT was the first Alberta theatre to dedicate itself solely to new Canadian writing and it remains one of very few producing theatre companies in Canada to retain the mandate of developing and producing Canadian work as its sole focus.

The staff and board of Workshop West Playwrights' Theatre celebrate the spirit of Ta-tawâw, that there is room here, for all peoples and their stories. We understand that not only do we live and work on Treaty Six lands – the traditional territories of First Nations and Métis peoples – but that we are also in a sacred relationship with the land and the people of this area known as Amiskwacîwâskahikan (ᐊᒥᐢᑿᒌᐚᐢᑲᐦᐃᑲᐣ), colonially known as Edmonton. We aim to live in accordance with the original intent of the Treaties, building trust and protection in our circle of relations.
